Professor Danielle George is a scientist and lecturer who was born in Fenham, Newcastle.

Danielle’s work focuses on electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves have all different uses in our everyday life. Danielle investigates radio waves and microwaves. Her work involves using these waves to design communication systems. These systems send large amounts of information across long distances, which is how mobile phones get their information. There are many ways this technology can be advanced and used to solve real life problems. Danielle has applied her work to many different projects, one of which was helping to build the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, the largest observatory in the world. As the UK lead for amplifiers, Danielle has also worked on the Square Kilometer Array. Both arrays are radio telescope projects that are used to research how stars and galaxies began. NASA was another place Danielle has worked, to develop instruments for researchers to explore the Big Bang. These projects are far-reaching and involving working with many governments and are only a small number of the possibilities available when working in this field of work.

From relatively subtle beginnings, Danielle is a well-known and respected figure in her field, becoming a professor at the age of 38. Danielle was given a telescope at the age of 8, and it was this that sparked her early interest in this field. From then on, she would wake up in the night and watch lunar eclipses. This was the first moment Danielle realised how physics and maths could be applied to the world in a practical way. Danielle is an inspiration to all, both young children, teenagers, and aspiring scientists that the people of the North can and have achieved big things.
