North East Museums' Chair Knighted

Journalist, author, former Member of Parliament and Chair of North East Museums’ Strategic Board, Sir Chris Mullin has been knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours List. 

Sir Chris Mullin has been Chair of North East Museums’ Strategic Board for three years.  During his time as Chair he has seen North East Museums through some significant milestones including expanding to manage museums in Northumberland, a rebrand and delivering several high-profile exhibitions including exhibiting Art collections at 10 Downing Street. 

In his role as Chair of North East Museums’ Strategic Board Sir Chris and his fellow board members provide guidance and scrutiny to support the executive team effectively manage 12 museums and galleries across the North East and the archives for Tyne and Wear. 

Keith Merrin, Director of North East Museums, said: 

“This is wonderful news and very well deserved. Sir Chris has dedicated his career to public service and in his time as our Chair he has been a passionate advocate for North East Museums and our role in serving our communities.” 

Sir Chris Mullin was Member of Parliament representing Sunderland and during his time in the House of Commons he also served as a Minister in three government departments between 1999 and 2005. He was Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund for the North East of England from 2012 to 2017 and is also a Member of the Northumberland National Park Authority.
