£1 heritage train rides for kids this August at Stephenson Steam Railway
Stephenson Steam Railway in North Tyneside has a special summer offer to delight families across the North East. Throughout August 2025, children aged 5–15 can enjoy a heritage train ride for just £1, with under 5s riding for free.
With rides running every Thursday and Sunday during August, families can step back in time and experience the region’s rich railway heritage aboard historic steam or diesel-pulled trains.
Geoff Woodward, Museum Manager at Stephenson Steam Railway, said:
“We’re excited to welcome families to the museum for a fantastic day out during the summer holidays. Our £1 children's train tickets make it more affordable than ever to enjoy a day out packed with history, nostalgia and fun.”
On Thursdays during August, children can also enjoy a free craft activity as part of North East Museums’ ongoing partnership with Tyne and Wear Metro. These free family activities are included in the Ways to Play family programme, which runs across the region.
After a train ride, kids can burn off some steam in the new Woodland Walk area – the space is perfect for a summer stroll or outdoor adventure. Entry to the Woodland Walk is completely free, and it’s open on running days. With winding paths, natural play opportunities, and plenty of space to explore, it’s a great way to round off your visit to Stephenson Steam Railway.
Alongside train rides and the new Woodland Walk area, visitors can also explore the museum, which is free to enter and is home to a fascinating collection of engines and artefacts. Visitors can also meet the dedicated volunteers of the North Tyneside Steam Railway Association, who keep the railway running.
The popular, volunteer-run Waggonway Tearoom is open on selected days, making it a great full-day experience for all ages.
