Join artist Jonny Hannah and North East Museums behind the scenes for an Open Studio event at the Moot Hall in Hexham.

Come and get a sneak peek at some of the artwork and ideas developed so far for the new interpretation and exhibitions for Hexham Old Gaol. 

Meet artist Jonny Hannah to hear some of the stories behind the artworks, and learn more about his creative practise and inspiration.

Take part

As it's Halloween, we’re also looking for volunteers to hold a coffin (artwork!) and be filmed, highlighting the Hexham Riot of 1761 -  a little-known massacre which claimed the lives of 50 folks from all over Hexhamshire.

This will be used to help publicise the project so we welcome everyone to stop by and get involved - the more the merrier!

Hexham Old Gaol is due to reopen in April 2027. Jonny’s work will be displayed alongside artwork created by prisoners from HMP Northumberland, produced as part of the wider project. The project has been funded by Art Fund, Historic England, the Linder Foundation, and Arts Council England.
