Hexham Old Gaol Reimagined

Hexham Old Gaol is entering an exciting new chapter. We’re undertaking an ambitious project to reimagine the museum’s spaces and bring to life the history of England’s first purpose-built prison.

Built in 1333, the Old Gaol has stood at the heart of Hexham for nearly 700 years, witnessing moments of justice and punishment, rebellion and resistance, as well as the everyday lives of the people who passed through its doors.

This project will present these histories in fresh and engaging ways, transforming how they are shared and discovered, and offering visitors new opportunities to connect with the past.

Working with Jonny Hannah

We are delighted to be collaborating with acclaimed illustrator and printmaker Jonny Hannah, known for his vibrant style, rich detail, and playful storytelling. Jonny has been working closely with our team and with communities across Hexham and the wider region to gather local stories and inspiration.

From the Tudor Gaol Break and the Border Reivers to the Hexham Riots, these events are being re-examined and retold through a lively, contemporary artistic lens. The result will be a series of new displays that reinterpret the Gaol’s remarkable history.

Shaped by the community

Community involvement has been central to the work. Over the past year, Jonny and the team have been listening to memories, stories and ideas shared by local people and community groups.

Together these voices are helping to shape how the Gaol’s story is told, creating a museum experience that is inclusive, rich in human detail, and exciting to explore.
