Prices and booking

Adults (18 or over) - £8 (£7 without optional donation)

Concession (over 60s, disabled visitors* and Student Card holders) - £7 (£6 without optional donation) 

Under 18s - free 

* Free admission for accompanying carers 

Your ticket is an Annual Pass, which allows you to enjoy unlimited repeat visits for the next 12 months. 

You can purchase your Annual Pass on the day of your visit from the Welcome Desk, we accept cash and card payments. 

You can buy a day admission in our online shop and convert it to an Annual Pass on your next visit to Hexham Old Gaol free of charge. 

If you gift an Annual Pass, it isn't activated until their first visit to us. 


Group visits

Group bookings and coach tours are welcome. 

Advance bookings and coach tours benefit from: 

  • Concession group admission rates
  • Free group leader admission 
  • Free driver admission 
  • Guided tour times can be arranged outside of our usual tour times if required (we recommend this for larger groups) 

Group visits from care homes with accompanying carers are entitled to free visits but must book in advance.

There is a coach dropping off point at Hexham Abbey and level access from there to the museum. 

Pay and display coach parking can be found at Wentworth Car Park.

Gift shop 

There is a small gift shop next to the Welcome Desk. You can also visit our online shop


Lifts

There is a wheelchair accessible glass lift which takes visitors to all floors. 

Visitors can view the Dungeon from the glass lift by pressing the 'D' button. The doors will not open, and visitors will hear a 90-second audio clip before the lift moves to the ground floor. 


Breastfeeding 

Breastfeeding is welcomed throughout the site. 


Dogs 

We are a dog-friendly museum. Assistance dogs and family pets are welcome at Hexham Old Gaol.


Café 

There is no café on site but there are a good range of places to eat, or have a picnic in Hexham town centre. 


Toilets and baby changing

There are no toilets and baby changing facilities on site. 

The nearest public toilets and standard accessible toilets are at Wentworth car park, a three minute walk from the museum. 

The nearest Changing Places toilet is in Tesco Extra, Hexham, approximately a six-minute walk from the museum. 


Getting here

We're located in Hexham Town Centre behind the Market Place. 

By car 

If you're using a Sat Nav, you can use the postcode NE46 1QE for Wentworth Car Park which is a three minute walk from the museum. 

Please follow the brown and white tourist road signs and black finger posts.

Car parking 

There is no on-site car park. 

The nearest car park is at Market Place, which is a one-minute walk from the museum. You can park for up to one hour with a parking disc but spaces are limited.

There are two Blue Badge spaces at Market Place. 

Alternatively, the main town centre car park is Wentworth, which is a three-minute walk from the museum. This car park offers long stay, medium stay and short stay parking with a parking disc. 

Parking discs are available from libraries, the Tourist Information Centre, local businesses and some car parks have a disc dispenser. 

Parking discs cost £1.

It is an eight minute walk from Hexham Train Station and a six minute walk from Hexham Bus Station to the museum.

By bus 

Stagecoach operates the number 685 bus service from Newcastle Eldon Square to Hexham Bus Station. This takes approximately 55 minutes.

During the school holidays, kids go free! Up to three children aged 11 and under can travel for free on the bus when accompanied by a fare-paying adult. Learn more on the North East Combined Authority website.

By rail 

Mainline rail connections to Newcastle upon Tyne arrive at Newcastle Central Station.
