Step inside a world of light, colour and sound this October half term as Arborialis, an immersive Luminarium by Architects of Air, comes to Woodhorn Museum.

A Luminarium is a monumental walk-in sculpture designed to create a sense of wonder through light and colour. Take off your shoes, step through the soft airlock and enter Arborialis, where winding paths, glowing tree-like forms and colourful canopies create an immersive world to explore.

Inside, you can wander through the labyrinth at your own pace, discover vibrant spaces and changing colours, or simply find a quiet spot to sit and take it all in. The experience is different for everyone, with no set route to follow and plenty of opportunities to pause, look around and enjoy the atmosphere.

Arborialis takes inspiration from the natural world, with its tree-like forms creating the feeling of wandering through an otherworldly forest. The design has been specifically chosen for Woodhorn because of its strong connection to the story of the site. Its arboreal forms provide a link between the ancient forests that became coal and the region’s industrial heritage, while its name also references the aurora borealis, reflecting Northumberland’s reputation as one of the UK’s premier dark sky locations.

Arborialis is fully accessible for wheelchair users and welcomes visitors with SEND. Warm socks are recommended as shoes must be removed before entering.
