Tally Wall

Remembering a special person or event?

Every miner would carry a tally – a small metal tag stamped with a unique number identifying him.

If you would like to remember a special person or event, please consider buying a ‘tally’ for the Tally Wall at Woodhorn Museum.

Woodhorn Tally Wall

Each ‘tally’ – which looks like an original coal miner’s tally – has space for a name, dates and a few words and they are mounted on a wall close to the entrance at Woodhorn Museum for all visitors to see.

Tallys can be purchased at Woodhorn Museum. Please speak to a member of staff on your next visit to find out more.

After you’ve purchased your tally we’ll send you an acknowledgement letter and a certificate when you make your donation and tell you when your tally is up on the wall to view. Your tally will remain on display at Woodhorn Museum for a minimum of ten years.

All donations from this special initiative will go towards our work preserving this important historical site for visitors, and telling the story of coal mining in the North East for generations to come.

Every Tally tells a story

"My beloved father worked on many mines in Northumberland as a mining surveyor. He was based in the coal board offices at Cramlington before the new town was built.

"His great grandchildren, often visit Woodhorn as it’s their favourite museum. He took the boys to Woodhorn for the first time when they were 3 years old, then came home , unrolled the maps he had made, showing the tunnels , they made a replica out of toilet and kitchen rolls. We visit Woodhorn many times a year. It was the great grandchildren who asked why GG (great grandad) was not on the wall. Thankyou for the opportunity to place a poignant memory of Dad."
