About

We are proud to welcome Ashington & District Male Voice Choir for a special event commemorating the 110th anniversary of the 1916 Woodhorn Mining Disaster.

The Woodhorn Mining Disaster occurred on the 13th August 1916 when a gas explosion, caused by a series of systematic errors leading to a lack of sufficient ventilation, tragically killed 13 mineworkers. The Ashington Miners Memorial statue now serves as a permanent memorial for the disaster at Woodhorn Museum.

In remembrance of this tragic event, Ashington & District Male Voice choir have created a special programme of heritage music that pays tribute to the great sacrifice paid by the men who worked underground at Woodhorn Colliery.

The choir will perform this special programme twice on the anniversary of the Disaster, at 11am and 1.30pm on Thursday 13th August 2026. The performances are free as part of Woodhorn Museum's annual pass scheme and no booking is required.

The Ashington & District Male Voice Choir Heritage and Legacy programme is supported by Ashington Town Council.
