Exterior view of Woodhorn Colliery buildings

Many of Woodhorn Colliery’s pit buildings remain to tell their extraordinary tales. They are open for you to explore, to discover more about the workings of the site and the stories of the people who worked here.

Some of the buildings you can explore and discover at Woodhorn include:

Heapstead
Stand directly over Woodhorn Colliery’s capped number 2 shaft, which descends a staggering 888ft below.

Jack Engine House
Steam powered, the Jack Engine transported miners up and down the mine shafts in a wooden tub.

Stable Block
Just heed the advice of your nose. It’ll soon tell you when you’re near the stables. Over the years, 200 pit ponies make a lasting impression

Cappell Fan House and Cappell Fan Motor Room
The heart of the mine’s ventilation system and the only example of a Cappell Fan still in existence.

The Winding House
Visit the heart of the pit. Discover the vital role played by the winderman and find out about the only man who could tell the colliery manager what to do.
