Getting around

There are two access points to the building - one via the main entrance to the Tourist Information Centre on Bridge Street, and one via the rear of the building into the Craft Centre. This second doorway is automatic and wider for wheelchair, pushchair and buggy access.
The paving in the courtyard to the rear of the building, and the area outside the Tourist Information Centre is uneven.
The museum can be accessed by a wheelchair accessible lift to the first floor, next to the staircase. Press the button to open the door, and once inside, continuously hold down the button to raise the lift. A noise will sound when you have reached the first floor.
Visitors can also use a staircase to access the museum. The staircase has 18 steps, broken by a half landing. It has open treads and one handrail to the right.
The museum is made up of two galleries linked by a small foyer at the top of the main staircase.
All floors are carpeted, but as the Chantry is a historic building dating back to the 13th century, the flooring is uneven.
All of our information brochures and evacuation plans are in large print.
Toilets
There is a standard accessible toilet. Keys for the toilets can be requested from a member of the Chantry staff on the ground floor.
There is no separate baby changing facility.
The nearest Changing Places toilet is Morpeth Leisure Centre, a three minute walk from the museum.
Displays and exhibitions
- The museum is furnished with large plate glass cases and one large hanging panel. All furnishings are fixed to the floor
- In the main gallery, there is a low stand fitted with a television for a video display
- Light levels in the gallery are low for conservation reasons
- Display cases are finished with glazed screens which have a low level of surface reflection
- Exhibition panels are printed in large text and most of them are printed on as black text on a white background, with high contrast.
Noise
We play recordings of small pipe performances and there are often live performances which take place in the gallery. For more information about performances, visit our What's On page
Occasionally, piping demonstrations take place at the advance request of visitors. This can be unexpectedly loud. If you would like to book a piping demonstration, please telephone us on 01670 624490 or email info@morpethbagpipemuseum.org.uk
