What's on

This October half-term we have some inspirational, fun activities for you to take part in at the museum.  
 
October half-term will see the launch of our brand-new family trail "Underground Adventures with Murray the Mole", this collection of trails invites you to explore museum collections, engage with objects and collect prizes. 

Tuesday 29 October, 9-10am 

Relaxed Early Opening - enjoy early access to the Great North Museum: Hancock for a quieter, more relaxed experience. Free, booking required. Click here to book >>

Tuesday 29 October, 10am–2pm

  • Underground Adventures with Murray the Mole.
  • Explore the fascinating world of microscopy and see things through a new perspective through the lens of a microscope with the incredibly engaging ‘Cell Detectives’ from Newcastle University. You can ask questions, learn new facts and have a go making some wearable fashion accessories using 3D printed mitochondria.
  • You can also make an upcycled hedgehog with staff from our Learning team.
  • Come along and meet Georgina and Albany Mouse for Mouse Tales, a drop-in interactive story time session aimed at under 5's and their families. Sessions run at 11-11.45am and 1-1.45pm.

Wednesday 30 October, 10am-2pm 

  • Underground Adventures with Murray the Mole.
  • Make an upcycled hedgehog with members of our Learning team and create a paper cat with our Keeper of Geology. 

Thursday 31 October, 10am-2pm

  • Underground Adventures with Murray the Mole.
  • Make an upcycled hedgehog with members of our Learning team. 
  • Learn how to make a compost bin at home. Don't know what to do with your pumpkin leftovers? Learn how to make your very own compost bin with our Environmental Records Information team.

Mythquest AR Adventure

Mythquest is a free augmented reality (AR) mobile quest for families visiting the Great North Museum: Hancock.

Download the Mythquest app before or during your visit and experience an interactive journey as you explore the museum and learn about myths from around the world. Free to download (iOS & Android).

Totally Chaotic History Museum Trail

Explore the amazing world of Roman Britain at the Great North Museum: Hancock this October half-term. Discover intriguing objects, give yourself a Roman name and design your own Roman outfit. Complete the activity sheet to receive your Totally Chaotic History sticker! Free to take part. For more information, please visit the Welcome Desk. Available until Saturday 2 November. 


Part of our Ways to Play programme of free and low-cost family-friendly activities.

Make your ‘Ways to Play’ adventure a great value day out by travelling to our venues by the Metro and / or Ferry.
