From chemical reactions to making zines! Join us at the Great North Museum: Hancock to meet University researchers who cover these subjects, and more.

Discover Japanese Language and Culture
10.00 - 15.15 | Small Clore

Develop your language skills and your creativity. Learn basic Japanese and discover origami and calligraphy. Enjoy activities for all ages in this workshop session, at Great North Museum: Hancock. The language taster session runs from 14:00 to 15:15 pm (Book online via ncl.ac.uk/discover-fest/)


Climate futures: Zine making workshop

Fire up your imagination in this relaxed mini zine workshop. Focusing on the theme of climate futures, you will learn all about zine making and how they can be used as a powerful tool for activism. Whether you're familiar with climate justice or it's brand new, join in, cut and stick and get collaging!

What's your favourite book? Share your love of stories in this creative activity, which will get you thinking all about the importance of reading together at home. Draw a picture or write about your favourite story time scenarios.

Experience the power of pH to create chemical changes. Explore how common household materials can create a spectrum of colours, depending on their chemical properties. Then use your knowledge of science to create artwork in visual experiments.


Shaping reality: understanding your brain

A journey into the fascinating world of sensory perception and neuroscience. Learn how our brains interpret information to create a picture of the world. Join us for hands-on activities and illusions. Explore 3D brain models and learn about different brain regions and their functions. Then colour and craft your own brain neuron to take home!

Have you ever considered the effect of streetlights? Join us in guessing games and activities focused on preserving our dark skies. Discover how insects are directly impacted by light pollution, and what you can do to help.


Howay! Do you know your North East accents?

Test your knowledge of local accents in this interactive session. Learn about the dialects of our region, and explore ideas of accent perception and identity. Then compete in our web-based game to see if you can identify where speakers are from within the North East. Mackem or Geordie? The top scorers of the day will win prizes.
