About
We are excited to share this lovely opportunity to create your own artwork inspired by the new exhibition featuring models from 19th century glassmakers Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka in the Great North Museum: Hancock, Imitating Life.
Imitating Life is an exhibition featuring the museum’s collection of glass marine invertebrate models from the renowned Blaschka family. The exhibition also includes invertebrate spirit specimens, fungi models, and an excerpt from the short film Fragile Legacy, directed by David O. Brown.
The Blaschkas made incredibly detailed, delicate glass models of invertebrate sea creatures through the second half of the 19th century. Bought by universities and museums across the world, they were a beautiful tool for teaching weird and wonderful underwater creatures.
We are very lucky to be joined by professional artists and makers from Sunderland University Glass and Ceramics course to teach people the skills and techniques necessary to create your own beautiful work of art.
Please note that we will be using translucent clay in this workshop, not glass, which will need to be fired in your home oven after the event. Details of how to do this will be given out at the event.
All materials will be provided, and a bar will be available to purchase drinks.
