Workshop Summary

Explore our unique outdoor areas and take part in active play activities with a backdrop of intriguing railway and natural heritage.

This session will include walking alongside Stephenson Railway track onto the cinder path then onto our butterfly meadow area before returning back to the museum via our art and heritage trail. We recommend ensuring that children are dressed appropriately for the weather as this session will be delivered outside. Wet weather options are available if needed.

On our cinder path we have hidden lots of painted insects so we will start the session off by asking the children to look out for these. Once we reach our butterfly meadow we will stop to read a story. We will then split your class into groups so they can take part in different activities on our butterfly meadow area. Activities could include exploring our meadow area to collect natural materials to create a pattern with them, building dens for creatures, investigating for minibeasts, making musical sounds and instruments, creating magical potions. Each of the activities will encourage children to explore our woodland walk through active learning and systematic play. We will finish off our session by creating a natural piece of art as we return to our museum via our Art and Heritage trail.
