The communities of South Tyneside are literally built upon coal. Rich seams of coal lie deep beneath the Borough and extend far beyond the coastline, under the waters of the North Sea. For centuries, as part of the vast Durham coalfield, our local coal mines were major employers, making a vital contribution to powering the nation. From heavy industry to the domestic fireside, ‘King Coal’ reigned supreme.
