A busy museum exhibition which is designed as a street. Visitors are looking in shop windows, laughing and chatting

The Victorian Pantry 

The Victorian Pantry is our tea room set in a cosy corner of the museum serving a wide range of hot and cold drinks, home-made cakes and other savoury treats. Take a seat at one of the vintage tables and be served by our friendly staff in costume dress. 

Takeaway is now also available. High Tea available subject to availability.

The Victorian Pantry is open: 

Monday - Saturday, 10am - 3pm (last food orders at 2pm) 


Gift shop 

You can find the gift shop on the ground floor of the museum at the entrance. You'll find a range of high-quality gifts, books, homeware, art and toys. You can also visit our Online Shop.


Toilets

Toilets are available on the first floor of the museum. 
Standard accessible toilets and baby changing facilities are available on the ground and first floors. 

The nearest Changing Places toilet is ASDA South Shields, Coronation Street, South Shields, NE33 1AZ, which is a seven-minute walk from the museum. 


Lift

Lifts and stairs provide access to the ground and first floors. The lift has a voice announcer.

There is a lift which provides access between the museum entrance and galleries. 


Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is welcomed throughout the museum.

South Shields Museum & Art Gallery is a three minute walk from South Shields by Metro. 

You can make your visit an even greater value day out by travelling to Discovery Museum by Metro. Up to three children aged 11 and under can travel for free on the Metro and the Shields Ferry when accompanied by a fare-paying adult. 

You can save on adult fares too by using Pop Pay As You Go. Save up to £1 on single tickets and up to £1.60 on day tickets.

Mainline rail connections to Newcastle upon Tyne arrive at Central Station.

By ferry 

South Shields Museum & Art Gallery is a nine minute walk from the South Shields Ferry Landing


By car 

The museum postcode is NE33 2JA

The museum doesn't have a car park, however there is street parking available on Ocean Road after the Anderson Street junction. Alternatively there is a public multi-storey car park off Anderson Street. Ensure you follow signs for South Shields town centre and then the A183 towards the seafront to find the areas to park.

Coaches and taxis can drop off in the layby on Anderson Street or at nearby Mile End Road.
