Workshop Summary

This workshop offers children and young people a unique opportunity to engage with an original masterpiece by Claude Monet, on loan as part of the National Gallery Masterpiece Tour. This is the first year of a three-year partnership between South Shields Museum and the National Gallery.

Focusing on The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil (1872), you'll explore Monet’s sources of inspiration and artistic techniques. Through guided close looking, sensory activities, and Foley art, the creative use of everyday objects to produce sound, participants will be invited to immerse themselves in this magical and contemplative riverside landscape.

The exhibition is complemented by other artworks from our collections that draw on the similarities between what Monet experienced and painted in Argenteuil, a small suburb of Paris, and local South Tyneside history.

This 90-minute workshop also includes time in the art studio, where participants can create their own artistic responses inspired by the exhibition through expressive mark making.

To enhance the experience, local schools can book a free in-school assembly prior to their visit. This introduction to Claude Monet and South Shields Museum & Art Gallery is delivered by our Learning Team, who can travel within a five-mile radius of the gallery.

Workshop Objectives:

  • To learn about Claude Monet and the defining features of Impressionism.
  • To relate artistic ideas and works to societal, cultural and historical contexts to deepen understanding locally and afar.
  • To describe contrasting interpretations of an artwork to identify multiple perspectives and diverse community ideas.
  • To practice visual literacy and critical thinking skills through close looking, observation, and discussion centred on works of art in the exhibition.
  • To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share ideas, experiences, and imagination.
  • To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form, and space.
