About

To mark 500 years since Tintoretto’s birth, we invite you to uncover the mystery of one of the most famous artworks in the Shipley collection.

Christ Washing the Disciples’ Feet was painted by Tintoretto between 1548 and 1549. Its story begins in Venice, where it was a companion piece to Tintoretto’s Last Supper in the church of San Marcuola. From there, it made a mysterious journey to Paris, London and Newcastle before becoming part of the Shipley Art Gallery’s collection.

This striking, 5 metre-wide painting is brimming with optical illusion, symbolism, religious references and even humour. Join us to discover its intriguing story.

This talk is delivered by John Thompson who is a former Director of Tyne & Wear Museums. Previously, John was a curator at Whitworth and City Art Gallery, Manchester, and Director of Arts and Museums, Bradford.
