About

Step back in time this summer with our hands-on series of Roman and Celtic-themed activities. Taking place every Monday, these fun, family-friendly sessions invite you to explore archaeology, discover Roman life, and get creative with a range of crafts.

Monday 20 July
Explore archaeology

Find out what archaeologists do with an object once it has been removed from the ground. Have a go at finding, sorting and cleaning Roman artefacts.   

Monday 27 July
Pottery coins

The Romans liked to show off the Roman Emperors on their coins. Have a go at making your own Roman coin.  

Monday 3 August
Eagle Standard

Be inspired by Roman Standards and the majestic image of the eagle to make your very own standard to take home with you.

Roman brooches

Enjoy looking at examples of Roman brooches and be inspired to make your very own. 

Roundhouse making
Monday 17 August
The Celts lived in roundhouses. Have a go at making your very own Celtic roundhouse.  

Monday 24 August
Chamfron making

Roman calvary soldier’s horses wore chamfrons to protect their heads during battle. Have a go at designing and creating your own chamfron.  

All summer long
Take part in our Roman Herbs trail, where you will be able to explore our museum and outside areas to find examples of different Roman herbs. Visit our Herb garden to see examples of these herbs growing.


These events are part of our Ways to Play series of free and low-cost family-friendly activities taking place in museums and galleries across Tyneside.

Make your Ways to Play adventure a great value day out by travelling to our venues by the Metro and / or Ferry.  Up to three children aged 11 and under can travel for free on the Metro and the Shields Ferry with a fare-paying adult.
