Chinese New Year in Newcastle

Dates

About

This February during half-term holidays at Discovery Museum, join us to welcome the Year of the Horse with a day of free family making activities, crafts and tasty treats. Help us decorate the museum and celebrate the traditions of the festival.

Chinese New Year is a key celebration for Chinese and British Chinese communities, including here in Newcastle. The city’s annual Chinese New Year parade has become a much-loved community event.

This is our first year marking the festival at the museum and we’re excited to add to the celebrations.

Featuring:
  • Window Blossom Making – Create beautiful paper cut-out blossoms to decorate the museum and take home for good luck in the New Year!
  • New Year Wishes – Write your hopes for the year ahead and hang them on our glowing lantern wish wall.
  • Chinese Tea Tasting – Discover the flavours and traditions of Chinese tea with a special tasting experience with special brews of Jasmine and Oolong
  • Sweet Rice Cake Tasting – Try delicious traditional New Year rice cakes symbolising prosperity and togetherness.
  • Solve the Lantern Riddles – Put your thinking cap on and crack the classic Chinese lantern riddles for festive fun!
