About
Enjoy creative activities together on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the summer holidays!
Each session has a different theme, and you'll take home something special you've made every time. Be inspired by the artworks on display and try a range of art materials in the beautiful surroundings of the gallery. Our friendly artists are here to support and can't wait to see what you create!
Session Themes:
Week 1- Inspired by landscape and seascape paintings:
Tuesday 25 July - Construct a paper flag; and make a watercolour resist windsock using wax crayons and watercolour paints.
Thursday 27 July - Make landscape and seascape collages and drawings.
Week 2 - Inspired by quilts and ceramics:
Tuesday 1 August - Be inspired by our quilts: collage your own pattern using paper; and have a go at weaving with wool and sticks.
Thursday 3 August - Be inspired by Jin Eui Kim's ceramics: make circle-inspired artworks using various drawing and painting materials.
Week 3 - Inspired by Saltwell Park Museum and Designs for Life galleries:
Tuesday 8 August – Be inspired by the animals in the artworks: make a lion mask and a colourful, tropical bird decoration.
Thursday 10 August – Be inspired by the 3D letters in the Designs for Life gallery: make personalised artwork using your initial.
Week 4 - Inspired by paintings:
Tuesday 15 August - Be inspired by still life and landscape paintings: paint a watercolour rainbow, and make beautiful paper flowers.
*Please note, there is no Family Arts Festival on Thursday 17 August. Instead we have Under 5s Fun Day (older siblings welcome) - see website for info.*
Week 5 - Inspired by sculpture, glass and ceramics:
Tuesday 22 August – Make a 3D artwork where shapes jump off the page; and create your own sculptural hat using paper and card.
Thursday 24 August – Be inspired by butterflies in the artwork. Make your own butterfly ring, and a butterfly picture with wings that really flutter.
Week 6 - Inspired by YOU - because everyone's an artist!
Tuesday 29 August - Mix it up! Explore the gallery and discover how varied art is. You're the artist today - make something entirely from your own imagination, or inspired by the artwork on display. There'll be an exciting array of materials available for you to use in imaginative ways. We can't wait to see what you make!
Thursday 31 August - Summer Sketchbook Challenge! You'll be provided with a sketchbook which is yours to keep. We'll also have a range of exciting drawing prompt cards available - pick one up and try out its suggestion for drawing in the gallery. This workshop involves moving around the gallery rather than sitting at a table. Lightweight folding stools and padded cushions can be provided.
