About

DesignLab Nation is a secondary school programme delivered by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).

The programme brings together secondary schools in partnership with regional museums, designers, industries, and the V&A to inspire the next generation of designers, makers, and innovators through in-depth design projects.

Inspired by the Shipley’s collection of unique Studio Ceramics, students were tasked to re-imagine their local high street. Using left over packaging from global business, they were tasked to create unique designs which respond to the needs of the community and celebrate local culture. Their aim has been to add joy, foster a sense of local pride, and offer thoughtful spaces for Gateshead’s communities to come together.

This exhibition showcases work created by students from Kingsmeadow Community School and XP Gateshead during artist-led workshops at the Shipley Art Gallery and Orbis Community studios in Gateshead.
