About

In this moving workshop, led by artist Tracey Tofield, participants will be drawing and painting portraiture from life and will have the option to have their own portrait drawn or painted. Participants are encouraged to bring to the workshop an object of great value to them to hold.

Materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own art supplies if you’d prefer. Please note, materials will be restricted to pencils, charcoal, pastels and watercolour paints etc. It will not be possible to use materials with staining qualities during the session.

This event is for participants of all abilities. The session will take place in the Laing Art Gallery Function Room, with up to 12 participants.


Tracey Tofield
MFA MEd FRSA

Born in Barnet, London in 1967, brought up in Northampton shire from age 6-19, Tracey gained a first class honours degree in Fine Art at Coventry Polytechnic in 1989. Awarded an Educational scholarship to study the MFA at Newcastle University from 1989-1991. She has since gained another Postgraduate degree in Educational research, worked as a ‘Creative Agent’ for Creative Partnerships and has had a wide variety of jobs and work in mental health and community education.

As well as being a full-time artist, Tracey has worked part-time at Newcastle University in the Fine Art department for over 26 years. She taught drawing to Architecture students for 7 years.

Tracey was taught by artist Michael Brick (who then also became her colleague) who in his student years was taught by artist Richard Hamilton.

Tracey specializes in Life Drawing and the human body/mind/form.
