Dr Jane Colbourne, Programme Leader, MA Conservation of Fine Art at Northumbria University, reveals the drawing methods and materials Leonardo da Vinci and his contemporaries used, and how that shaped their pictures and artistic practice.
Graphite pencil had no place in Leonardo’s work. Early in his career, he often worked in metalpoint, which involved using a silver stylus to make a mark on a specially prepared surface.
He then moved to pen and ink, creating lively, flowing drawings. Some of his most subtle drawings are in red or black chalk, expertly creating highlights, shading and fine detail.
This talk complements the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Ten Portraits from the Royal Collection.
