About

Do we see the world as it really is? Can we trust our senses? Can art offer knowledge? What does it mean to notice something? Are some unknown things unknowable?

This mini-series of adult workshops run by Thinking Space offers an exciting opportunity for you to explore and discuss rich philosophical themes raised by the Hatton’s current exhibition, Unsensed. Each session addresses a different pair of artists and you are welcome to attend all three if you would like.

The format of the workshops will be welcoming and informal, and you don’t have to know a lot about philosophy to take part. All sessions will begin with a brief curator-led tour of the exhibition, and there will be a 15 minute break mid-session when tea and coffee will be provided.

These workshops are free but spaces are limited so please reserve your place by emailing Madeleine.Kennedy@twmuseums.org.uk or by clicking the link ‘Reserve a Place’ at the top of this page.

Session details:

Saturday 14 November - 'Unnoticed', 1pm-3.30pm
Investigating the notion of “Unsensed” as unnoticed, stimulated by the artworks of Yelena Popova and Rachel Garfield, which include images that may escape our attention and ideologies we may struggle to see.

Saturday 28 November - 'Unperceived', 1pm-3.30pm
Exploring the idea of “Unsensed” as unperceived, taking inspiration from artworks by Matthew Tickle and Matthew Flintham which use instruments and maps to reveal what our senses hide.

Saturday 12 December - 'Unknown', 1pm-3.30pm
Investigating the idea of “Unsensed” as unknown, looking at artworks by Aaron Guy and Autumn Richardson & Richard Skelton which uncover forgotten etymologies and censored images.

For each session please meet at the Hatton Gallery reception desk to take part.
